Newcastle
University is one of the largest universities in the U.K., offering
study in a wide range of subjects; with over 18,412 students from
the U.K. and overseas. Structured into three faculties, the
University is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research.
Newcastle University has 4,796 full-time staff, of which 2,182 are
academic and research staff, supported by postgraduate students and
330 technical staff. The School of Marine Science and Technology is
the largest and most broad-based marine department in Europe,
covering the fields of Offshore Engineering, Marine Engineering,
Naval Architecture, Small Craft Technology, Oceanography, Marine
Biology and Coastal Management. The School has a complement of 35
full-time academic staff, with full technical support. It has a
high national research rating (5) and is very active in both
international and national collaborative research projects. The
School's current research areas, supported by 26 research associates
and 65 research students, include marine environmental
sustainability and safety; marine innovative design and
manufacturing processes; marine and offshore structures and
materials; marine informatics and control; marine hydrodynamics and
propulsion; surface and underwater robotic systems; marine
biofouling/antifouling; marine chronobiology; marine invertebrate
reproduction; coastal management; marine systems ecology; and marine
aquaculture. Newcastle University adheres to the principles of the
